High-Speed RHIB Cruise to See Wild Seals, Sea Lions & Dolphins (Victor Harbor)

This is wildlife encounters with genuine adrenaline attached. The 45-minute Seal Island tour departs Victor Harbor aboard Kondoli—a powerful Rigid-Hulled Inflatable Boat with three 250hp outboards that surge you across the Southern Ocean toward Seal Rock/Island where Long Nosed Fur Seals and Australian Sea Lions bask in the sun and frequently swim right up to the stationary boat to investigate the passengers.

You'll depart from the Granite Island Causeway (adjacent to the iconic horse-drawn tramway), cruise alongside Granite Island's weathered natural granite sculptures, out past the breakwater and into open Southern Ocean. The power of the boat getting there is part of the experience—this isn't a gentle pontoon cruise, it's a fast, exhilarating ride that delivers you to genuine wild wildlife encounters.

At Seal Island, seals and sea lions often approach the stationary boat out of sheer curiosity—no feeding, no staging, just wild animals deciding you're interesting enough to investigate up close. Dolphins (common and bottlenose) frequently appear in the vicinity and sometimes race the boat, swimming around the stern for spectacular photo opportunities. Seabirds including petrels, shearwaters, and cormorants add to the wildlife spectacle.

What you'll experience:

  • Fast RHIB boat ride across Southern Ocean (3x 250hp outboards)
  • Wild Long Nosed Fur Seals and Australian Sea Lions at Seal Rock/Island
  • Seals often swim directly to stationary boat
  • Common and bottlenose dolphins (frequently race the boat)
  • Seabirds: petrels, shearwaters, cormorants
  • Weathered granite coastline and Granite Island views
  • Southern Ocean open water experience

Perfect for families with adventure-loving kids who want wildlife encounters with genuine thrills attached. The combination of high-speed boat and wild seal interactions makes this significantly more exciting than typical wildlife cruises. Dolphins racing the boat for photos is an unexpected bonus that kids absolutely love. Best for families with kids old enough to handle open ocean speed and spray (roughly 6+).

FAQ's

  1. Opening Hours: By booking
  2. What time should we arrive: At least 15 minutes prior to your departure time.
  3. Food & Beverage: As the Big Duck Tours operate in the Southern Ocean, the tours can be at times bumpy and take on a bit of spray…. We recommend having meals/drinks prior or after the tour.
  4. Where to meet: Granite Island Causeway, Victor Harbor SA 5211
  5. Car Parking: Please find parking around Flinders Parade/Esplanade area, and then walk ~300m out along causeway to boat landing & The Big Duck crew & vessel.
  6. What should we wear: Waterproof jackets are provided on board the boat.  Temperatures out on the ocean are often 10° cooler than on the land, even on a summers day it can be cool.  Please rug up in winter during whale season.
  7. Will I get sea sick: Being in open ocean, sea sickness can be an issue for a small number of people. If you think that it might be a problem for you? we recommend taking an over the counter ginger-tablet or/ travel-sickness medication at least 1-hour prior to your tour.
  8. Accessibility: No, unfortunately the Big Duck Boats are not wheelchair accessible. The vessels have a large inflatable ring around the boat that needs to be stepped up onto from a jetty, there are grab-rails either side and a small step inside the vessel. Tours operate from the Granite Island Causeway, so accessibility is reasonably close (~300m along Causeway & 350-500m from car parking areas). Passengers need to be mobile enough to negotiate steps and board the vessel. Please see the images below regarding access. Boarding at Wirrina Cove is very similar via floating pontoon.  The vessel is subject to move around (up/down & side to side) with wave surge & swell. Step heights can be dependant with the tide heights and weather conditions on the day of travel.
