The Larrakia Cultural Centre is a Larrakia-owned cultural centre on Darwin Harbour, built at the foot of the Larrakia sacred site at Stokes Hill. General Admission lets your family explore it at your own pace: wander the gardens, take in the exhibition and gallery, and stay longer wherever the kids are most curious. The building is part of the story too, with a form that evokes a Larrakia ancestral being in flight.
Start outside in the gardens, where native plantings and sculpture trace the Gulumoerrgin Seven Seasons. Kids can look for how each season is shown before you head under the building's sweeping form. Inside, the permanent exhibition shares Larrakia cultural knowledge, history and significant treasures repatriated from collections around the world. The temporary gallery shows evolving work by Larrakia artists, so the displays change over time. Browse the retail store, where purchases directly support Larrakia businesses and artists, then finish at the restaurant, which serves local produce and bush ingredients with views across the harbour.
Kids come away knowing that Darwin is Larrakia Country, with its own language, seasons and stories. They hear that from Larrakia people in a place Larrakia people own, not from a textbook.
Perfect for families who like to explore at their own pace. With no guide, you can follow the kids' interest, spend longer in the gardens or gallery, and leave when attention runs out. It's good for primary-aged kids and teens interested in art, history or First Nations culture, and for families new to Darwin who want to understand whose Country they're on. The family ticket ($81 for 2 adults and 3 children) keeps it affordable, and it works well as the first stop on a Darwin Waterfront day. If your family would rather hear the stories behind the building and artworks from a guide, the Public Guided Tour is the better fit.
