SPARK CREATORS with Summer Land Camels

Buckle up for a behind the scenes adventure with Australia’s largest camel farm and dairy!

In this Spark Creators blog we chat with Founder and CEO of Summer Land Camels, Paul Martin.   Read on as Paul shares some of the best parts of their beautiful farm located in the Scenic Rim just an hour west of Brisbane.

1. How long has Summer Land Camels been operating for, and how long have you been involved?

Summer Land Camels started in 2016 and as a founder, I’ve been involved since the initial concept.

2. What do you enjoy most about your role with Summer Land Camels?

It brings me such joy when I see kids interacting with our camels. It’s amazing to think that many of them were once wild camels out in the desert and now they are here at our farm, looking for pats and a feed from our visitors.

3. What do kids love most about Summer Land Camels?

Each school holidays, we have a special kids’ day – our Little Humpty Days and they are very popular. From our regular activities, I would have to say that Camel Rides are No1 with the kids.  We have rides from Friday to Sunday plus every day during school holidays.

4. What do parents love most about Summer Land Camels?

Creating unique memories with the kids while giving them an authentic farm experience.  We are Australia’s largest camel farm and dairy, and while at our farm you can try the products made with our camel milk.

5. What sustainability initiatives do Summer Land Camels have in place or have coming soon?

We use sustainable farming practices and our farm is chemical free.  Our skincare packaging is recyclable. One of our most unique products – our Camel Milk Vodka is very sustainable as we use the whey, a by-product from making our cheese. Sorry kids, you’ll have to wait a few years to try that one but your parents will enjoy a taster!

6. Can you tell us about a particularly memorable experience you’ve had?

It’s very important for us, as a business, to engage with our community on a number of levels.  We have students from a local special school that do work experience here at the farm. It’s so great to see the students try new things and grow in confidence as their skills increase.

7. What’s your favourite treat?

Definitely Camel Milk Gelato.  It’s delicious and it’s also great for those with dairy sensitivities.

8. As a Dad yourself, what would be your go to kids gift?

l plush toys that are available from our farm shop. They get to take a camel with them to cuddle and play with at home.

9. What’s a cool/fun fact about Summer Land Camels we may not know?

One of the cool things about camels is that the babies stay with their mums until they naturally wean themselves at 12-18 months of age. Camels have a very strong bond with their babies and they can’t be milked unless their babies are with or near them. It also means that we have around 100 baby camels born on the farm between September and January and they are super cute.
