About

Taste Bush Tucker, See the Boomerang Up Close & Hear Taribelang Stories at Sites of Significance Across Bundaberg

This is Bundaberg told by the people who’ve lived on this Country for more than 60,000 years. The Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow Tour is a 3-hour small-group bus tour run by family-owned Taribelang Bunda Cultural Tours and developed with Taribelang Bunda Elders. It visits sites of significance across the region while guides share language, Dreaming and history passed down through generations.

You’ll meet your guides at the Taribelang Aboriginal Corporation office in Bundaberg North, then head to the Burnett River for stories of the town’s recent history and an introduction to Taribelang Country. In the CBD, guides show where today’s roundabouts sit over former billabongs once visited by booroo (kangaroo) and emus. The tour moves on to Bundaberg Creek and the area around the Bundaberg Rum Distillery, then to The Hummock. There you’ll stretch your legs, see traditional artefacts like the boomerang up close, and share a picnic morning tea of native bush flavours. Later stops include Mon Repos and Round Scrub, with teachings on caring for Country. On the way back, guides point out local Indigenous artworks and community projects.

Kids aged 8 and up hear history from the people whose story it is, including the harder chapters, in a small group where questions and open conversation are welcomed.

WHAT YOU’LL EXPERIENCE

  • Dreaming stories and Taribelang language shared on Country
  • Pre-colonisation Bundaberg: billabongs where the CBD now stands
  • Bush tucker flavours at morning tea
  • How the boomerang was made and used in daily Taribelang life
  • Teachings on caring for Country
  • Honest history, including darker stories that can be emotional
  • Local Indigenous artworks and current community projects

Perfect for families with kids aged 8 and up who want to understand Bundaberg beyond the brochure version, whether they’re visiting or have lived here for years. It suits curious kids learning about Australian history and First Nations perspectives at school, parents who want their children to hear these stories directly from Traditional Owners, and grandparents travelling with grandkids, since most of the moving between sites is done by bus. The small-group format works well for two families booking together, which also covers the 6-guest minimum. It isn’t designed for toddlers or kids who need constant movement. This is a listening, looking and talking tour, and some of the history is heavy.

WHY THIS MATTERS
Hearing Bundaberg’s history from the Taribelang people who still care for this Country, at the river, the creek and the lookout where it happened, gives kids a version of the story that classrooms and textbooks rarely tell.
