About

Get Dotty with Kusama!

This summer, the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) invites families to step into the whimsical world of Yayoi Kusama with Kusama for Kids. As part of Australia’s largest-ever exhibition of Kusama’s art, this experience features interactive installations and creative activities designed to delight visitors of all ages. The highlight is The Obliteration Room, where children and families can transform an all-white space by adding colourful dots, creating a vibrant, ever-changing artwork together.

Beyond The Obliteration Room, families can explore other captivating works by Kusama, including the mesmerizing Waterwall, the playful Dancing Pumpkin, and the reflective Narcissus Garden. From January 11–17, children can also decorate their own paper pumpkin with colourful dots in a special drawing activity, taking home a personalized piece inspired by Kusama’s signature style. These hands-on experiences provide a fun and inspiring introduction to the world of contemporary art.

Paired with Kusama’s companion book, Lots of Dots, and the January Kids Summer Festival, Kusama for Kids offers an unforgettable day out for families. With free entry to The Obliteration Room and many activities, the NGV makes it easy to connect over art and creativity, creating memories to treasure.

About the Artist

Yayoi Kusama is recognised as one of the most important artists of her time, with an international career spanning more than eight decades. Born in 1929, she was raised in Matsumoto in central Japan where her family owned a large seed nursery. It was here that Yayoi began painting and drawing at age ten. Throughout her career, Yayoi has returned to the motifs of flowers, pumpkins and polka dots that she depicted as a child growing up among the fields of flowers and vegetable crops.
