About

Conscious explorers will find their element, getting up close and at one with nature’s wonders

Discover the enchanting world of Warrawong Wildlife Sanctuary, the only place on mainland South Australia where you can glimpse the elusive platypus. Beyond platypuses, Warrawong is a thriving, protected ecosystem, home to koalas, kangaroos, wallabies, bandicoots, potoroos, bettongs, and rare native birds—all safely living within the sanctuary’s unique feral-proof fence.

Founded in 1969 by Dr. John Wamsley, this 35-acre sanctuary was one of the first to implement a protective barrier against predators like cats and foxes, creating a safe haven for Australia’s beloved wildlife. From animal encounters and behind-the-scenes experiences to immersive tours and camping, Warrawong offers something for all ages to explore and appreciate.

Visit Warrawong Wildlife Sanctuary for a tranquil escape where nature flourishes—Australia at its most natural and serene.

Explore Further

The award winning Sanctuary was founded in 1969 by Dr John Wamsley, when he purchased a 35 acre dairy. Later, he and his wife Proo surrounded the property with a 2.1 metre high, electrified, feral proof fence. The fence created a safe haven where native animals were protected from introduced predators like cats and foxes. Many consider this approach to be a world’s first.
