Mulligans Flat comes alive after dark when nocturnal native animals emerge to forage, feed, and call across the sanctuary—and you get to witness it from inside the predator-proof fence where species extinct from mainland Australia for nearly 100 years are thriving without foxes and feral cats.
Your guide takes you deep into the sanctuary as twilight falls, where you might witness the Eastern Bettong foraging on native truffles in the wild (this species hasn't been seen on the Australian mainland outside sanctuaries for almost a century), tiny sugar gliders eating nectar from flowering eucalyptus tops, kangaroos and wallabies feeding in their natural environment, and possums slowly walking along the ground from tree to tree—an adaptation to their predator-free world.
The night fills with strange sounds as different species call to one another: the distant cry of Bush Stone-curlews awakening to search for insects in grassy woodland, possums communicating between trees, wallabies moving through undergrowth. You're not just observing animals—you're experiencing critically endangered woodland ecosystem restoration in action, learning how science is enhancing our understanding and ability to bring these environments back from the brink.
What you'll experience:
Perfect for families with nature-loving kids who want to see genuinely rare Australian wildlife thriving in restored habitat—not zoo enclosures. The Eastern Bettong sighting alone is remarkable (extinct on mainland outside sanctuaries), and watching animals behave naturally in predator-free environment shows what Australian ecosystems looked like before introduced species. Good for kids interested in conservation, science, or wildlife who can appreciate the significance of seeing species most Australians will never encounter. The twilight timing and nocturnal sounds create magical atmosphere while the conservation science aspect gives genuine educational depth.
