About

Explore the Living Heritage of Gunditjmara Country

Embark on a 2-hour immersive journey through Tae Rak (Lake Condah), a site of profound cultural and ecological significance within the Budj Bim Cultural Landscape, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Led by knowledgeable Gunditjmara guides, this tour offers a unique insight into one of the world's oldest known aquaculture systems, where the Gunditjmara people have sustainably harvested kooyang (short-finned eels) for thousands of years.

🌿 Tour Highlights

  • Cultural Narratives: Begin with an introduction to the Gunditjmara creation story, setting the stage for understanding the deep connection between the people and the land.

  • Aquaculture Systems: Explore the ancient stone eel traps and channels, ingeniously constructed to manage and harvest eels, showcasing early examples of sustainable engineering.

  • Biodiversity: Discover the rich marine and bird life that inhabit the 1,700 hectares of wetlands and stony rises, adjacent to the historic lava flows of Budj Bim National Park.

  • Tae Rak Aquaculture Centre & Café: Conclude your tour at the centre, where you can view live kooyang in the holding tank, enjoy bush tucker-inspired meals, and browse local crafts.

Experience the enduring legacy of the Gunditjmara people and gain a deeper appreciation for their innovative aquaculture practices that continue to inspire sustainable living today.
