About

Where fossils, outback spirit, and ancient wonders collide!

No place captures the spirit of the outback quite like Hughenden, perched on the edge of a prehistoric inland sea 380km west of Townsville. Once home to dinosaurs and marine reptiles, today this fossil-rich town is framed by four national parks and breathtaking ancient landscapes.

At the Flinders Discovery Centre, step back in time to the Cretaceous period. Marvel at more than 3,000 fossil specimens, explore the story of the first fossil discovered here in 1865, and meet the local star, Hughie — a life-sized skeletal replica of a 110-million-year-old Muttaburrasaurus. Kids will love the interactive play area, while curious minds uncover stories of shearing, local history, and the extraordinary Queensland Pterosaur.

Just 60km away, Porcupine Gorge National Park awaits — a natural wonder dubbed Australia’s ‘Little Grand Canyon’. Its dramatic cliffs, forest pockets, and permanent waterholes reveal hundreds of millions of years of history in spectacular colour.

Come for Hughie, stay for the outback adventure — your journey into prehistoric Queensland starts here!
