Brisbane Valley Rail Trail – A Scenic Family Adventure

The Brisbane Valley Rail Trail (BVRT) is Australia’s longest rail trail, stretching 161 km along the scenic route of the historic Brisbane Valley rail line. The Ipswich to Fernvale section offers the perfect family-friendly adventure, providing a mix of sandy, grassy, and gravel surfaces with picturesque views of farmland, forests, and rural landscapes. This traffic-free trail is ideal for all ages and skill levels, offering a safe and scenic environment for a leisurely day out.

Families can connect the trail with additional activities through the Brassall Bikeway, linking to The Workshops Rail Museum in North Ipswich and the historic Ipswich Central precinct. This route, only 6.5 km, offers fun stops at funky eateries, quirky shops, and attractions like Queens Park and the Ipswich Art Gallery, creating a full day of adventure and exploration.

Alternatively, take the train to Wulkuraka Train Station and enjoy an easy 3.5 km ride along the Brassall Bikeway to join the trail. Pro tip: For an easier ride, head from North to South, as the downhill sections are more gradual.

A fantastic way to experience Queensland’s countryside while bonding with family and enjoying fresh air!

FAQs

  1. Opening Hours: Open year round however some sections of the BVRT may be closed for short periods following severe weather events. Check out the DTMR webpage for up-to-date information.
  2. Accessibility: Does not cater for people with access needs.
  3. Is it dog friendly: Dogs are allowed on leash.
  4. What do I need to bring: Bring supplies as there is no services between towns. There are water bubblers in every town except Coominya, Moore and Yarraman Station Park where there is no town water supply.
  5. Is my bicycle suitable: MTBs and gravel bikes with off-road tyres and low gears are recommended. The BVRT is definitely unsuitable for light-weight racing bicycles or bicycles that lack the strength for off-road cycling. E-bikes are permitted and are a great way to enjoy the rail trail. If you carry a charger, most local cafes and pubs will let you plug in your battery whilst enjoying a meal. Accommodation providers and the major campsites have power points. Bicycles should be well maintained and you should carry a basic tool kit with puncture repair kit, and know how to use it.
