Step into Australia’s largest butterfly aviary in the heart of Kuranda, where over 1,200 vibrant tropical butterflies flutter freely around you! Just a short walk from the Skyrail and Kuranda Scenic Railway station, this all-weather sanctuary is a magical escape for all ages. Wander through lush gardens and boardwalks, wear your brightest colors, and watch as these graceful creatures land all around you.

Explore behind the scenes with a tour of the breeding laboratory, home to thousands of caterpillars, or dive into interactive exhibits like the UV Room and Mini Beasts display. Discover the butterfly life cycle, learn about food host plants on the plant walk, and see how each chrysalis is nurtured and released.   1. Opening Hours: Daily 9.30am to 3.30pm. Closed Christmas Day.
  2. Car Parking: Three hour parking is available across the road from the Australian Butterfly Sanctuary and around Kuranda Village. All day parking is available in the Kuranda library carpark (a 2 minute walk) which also caters for caravans and campervans.
  3. Accessibility: Actively welcomes people with access needs. Accept the Companion Card. Caters for people who use a wheelchair. Have step free outdoor pathways (includes picnic areas, barbecues and shelters). Have a step free main entrance to the building and/or reception area (includes ramps or slopes with a maximum gradient of 1:14, otherwise are too steep for wheelchairs). Welcomes and assists people who have challenges with learning, communication, understanding and behaviour. (includes people with autism, intellectual disability, Down syndrome, acquired brain injury (ABI), dyslexia and dementia). Caters for people who are blind or have vision loss. Provide information in large print. Provide information in audio format (includes an audio described map of your venue, audio descs of performances and/ or displays). Use easy read fonts in your signage and communication materials (Helvetica and Arial).
