Recycle Your Pre-Loved Toys with SPARK POP

Recycle Your Pre-Loved Toys

SPARK POP is thrilled to announce Australia’s largest indoor family entertainment centre Area 51 is the first venue to participate in its sustainability initiative to recycle pre-loved toys.

With more than 220 million toys sold in Australia each year, and 90% of them made of plastic (mostly made of ethylene and propylene produced by fossil fuels), the toy industry is the most plastic intensive and is clogging landfill, threatening oceans and marine life and accelerating climate change.

Toys in Landfill

More than 50% of toys are discarded within 12 months of purchase, ending their life in landfill.

Research by Australian Toy Association and Sustainability Victoria reveals 51 per cent of toys are thrown out as waste within 12 months of purchase.

This is the driving force behind SPARK POP’s vision to untrash playrooms, landfill and oceans of harmful plastics and the reason for this toy recycling initiative which aims to make it easier for parents, grandparents and carers to recycle their pre-loved toys.

SPARK POP’s toy recycling initiative is super simple thanks to TerraCycle‘s Zero Waste Box™ solution. Simply locate your nearest participating experience provider such as Area 51, locate the box in-store and drop off your pre-loved toys.  Once filled, the Zero Waste Box will divert up to 10kg of toys from landfill!

Playroom clean up

Playroom clean up

You may have several toys or games that can’t be passed on to others due to deterioration, lack of quality or no longer being functional. So rather than throwing them in the everyday home waste bin, you can collect and recycle any item used for play, including electronic toys.

Suitable items for recycling toys include:

  • Toys or toy pieces
  • Cards
  • Dice
  • Game boards
  • Packaging from board games
  • Books with sound
  • Handheld electronic games and players
  • Remote control vehicles
  • Electronic stuffed animals
  • Baby toys
  • Building sets
  • Stuffed animals
  • Puzzle pieces
  • Game pieces
  • Action figures

Once the box has been filled, it’ll be shipped to TerraCycle where it is sorted, turned into plastic granules and transformed into new products.

TerraCycle is an international organisation whose mission is to eliminate the idea of waste. Businesses, government entities, and consumers work with the organisation to keep rubbish out of landfills or from incineration.

SPARK POP believes by working together to achieve greater awareness, understanding and behaviour change we can reduce this destructive rate of consumption. Kids outgrow stuff, they never outgrow adventure. By choosing experiences over new toys or games more often, we contribute to a sustainable future by reducing plastic consumption and waste.

100% FUN, 100% Guaranteed not to end up in landfill.
