All aboard for a fun family adventure at the Queensland Museum Rail Workshops!

Step back in time and discover Queensland’s rich railway history at the heritage-listed Ipswich Railway Workshops—where the state’s rail journey began.

This award-winning museum is a must-visit for families exploring Ipswich. Once home to over 3,000 railway workers, the workshops now blend the charm of the past with the excitement of modern technology. As you walk through the historic Timekeepers’ Building, you’ll feel the magic of history come to life!

Inside the old boilershop, you’ll be wowed by stunningly restored locomotives and carriages, and kids will love the gigantic model railway—the largest in Queensland—packed with tiny details of real-life scenes across the state.

Don’t miss the daily heritage tours, perfect for little explorers, and if you visit during the winter school holidays, your family can join in the fun with the Day out with Thomas program—always a hit with the kids!
