About

Hans Christian Andersen's Original Tale (Not the Disney Version)

Victorian State Ballet presents The Little Mermaid—based on Hans Christian Andersen's original story, which is darker and more complex than the Disney film most kids know.

This production blends classical ballet with physical theatre to tell the tale of a young mermaid who rescues a sailor, transforms to pursue life on land, and discovers that every gift comes with a cost. Choreographed by Michelle Cassar de Sierra and Martin Sierra, it brings the underwater world alive with vibrant sea creatures and theatrical storytelling through dance.

The 2PM matinee during school holidays works well for families, though this is proper narrative ballet—kids need to sit quietly and follow the story through movement rather than dialogue.

Perfect for: Families with kids who enjoy ballet or theatre, ready for storytelling that's more complex than animated musicals.
